The Regional Government welcomes the data recently released by SREA – Azores Regional Statistics Service. They confirm a record number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Region in 2022 (+6.8% than in 2019) as well as an unprecedented record in hotel revenue (+20.97%).

According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, “these results reflect the excellent strategic positioning with the source markets and the performance of the tourism sector, which has been consolidating the recovery of the regional economy in an increasingly consistent manner” in the post-pandemic period.

In 2022, the highest number of overnight stays ever was registered in all types of tourist accommodation in the Region: hotels, tourist flats, inns, rural accommodation and local accommodation, which reached a total of 3,215,400 overnight stays, exceeding the 3,009,385 overnight stays recorded in 2019, the highest figure registered until then.

In terms of this indicator, the most important source markets are in descending order: Germany, the United States of America, France, Spain, Canada and the Netherlands. However, it should be noted that the markets that grew most in 2022, compared to 2019, were Italy (62.8%), France (33.5%), Switzerland (27.9%) and Denmark (23.1%).

As for overnight stays, per island, Flores was the one that grew the most compared to 2019, registering an increase of 26%, followed by Corvo at 20.3%, Terceira at 16.3%, Pico at 13.5% and Faial at 10%.

Berta Cabral mentioned that “the recovery registered in 2021 was more evident in the national and domestic market, which benefited from the Azores Fare,” a measure implemented by this Government.

“In 2022, there was an outstanding increase in overnight stays from foreign markets. This demonstrates the growing interest of international demand for the Azores destination as well as its competitiveness regarding other destinations that have not yet resumed their normal tourism activity,” added the Regional Secretary.
