The Azores and their agrifood products were represented in Lisbon at the 1st European Conference on Geographical Indications, which took place at the Lisbon Hotel and Tourism School. The event was a joint organisation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAA), the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DGADR) and the National Rural Network (RRN).

Products such as pineapples, bananas, honey, Graciosa garlic, passion fruit, São Jorge cheese and butter were presented at the IAMA – Institute for Food and Agricultural Markets stand and tasted by around 150 participants at the event, as part of a dinner prepared by renowned chefs.

The 1st European Conference on Geographical Indications aimed to share and carry out an in-depth analysis of Geographical Indications. It was attended by national and foreign experts.

For two days, Geographical Indications were debated from a wide range of perspectives, including the experience of European producers and national producer groups, the impact on gastronomic heritage and the development of rural areas, but also their role in sustainability and the importance of compliance monitoring.

There are currently more than 1,000 farmers in the Azores dedicated to producing PDO and PGI-certified products.
