LAGOA | Regional Government promotes seminar on “Democracy and Youth Participation”
The Regional Secretariat for Youth, Vocational Training and Employment, through the Regional Directorate for Youth, promotes the seminar on “Democracy and Youth Participation” next Tuesday, June 27, at Nonagon – São Miguel Science and Technology Park in Lagoa.
The event is part of the consultation and reflection work to define the operational goals of the Regional Plan for Democratic Literacy and Participation – DemocraciAZ, an initiative of the Regional Government aimed at being a multi-level, transdisciplinary and interdepartmental tool for the promotion of more active citizenship among young Azoreans.
The opening conference of the seminar will feature the participation of the former president of the Regional Government, João Bosco Mota Amaral, who will address the theme “The (New) Pillars of Democracy,” and Diana Duarte, author and presenter of “A Minha Geração” programme (Antena 3 – radio station and RTP 3 – television channel), who will address the theme “Democracy 2.0” and the new forms of democratic participation.
The programme of the meeting also includes the debate “Participation Challenges for Youth.” It will be dedicated to the theme of youth participation in the democratic process and civic life as well as to new forms of youth participation, including digital media, disinformation and fake news.
The debate, moderated by Dulce Bradford, Journalist for RTP-Açores (television channel), will feature a diversified panel, composed of Elias Pereira, lawyer and political commentator; Alexandre Gaudêncio, Mayor of Ribeira Grande; Sofia Botelho, volunteer and activist, and co-organiser of the Walk&Talk festival; Linda Luz, journalist for Antena 1/Açores (radio station); and Sebastião Silva, spokesperson for the Azores at the national session of the Youth Parliament – Secondary/Vocational Education – 2022/2023 edition.
The “Citizenship Brigades” project, promoted by Rabo de Peixe Basic Education School, will be presented during the seminar. This initiative aims to promote the leadership skills of young people.
The opening session will be chaired by the Regional Secretary for Youth, Vocational Training and Employment, Maria João Carreiro. The President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Luís Garcia, will chair the closing session.
The seminar on “Democracy and Youth Participation” is open to the public and will also be streamed on the Facebook page of the Regional Directorate for Youth.
