GRACIOSA | Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures awards coastal redevelopment works in Porto Afonso
The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures and the Regional Secretariat for the Sea and Fisheries, has awarded the works contract for the coastal redevelopment of Porto Afonso, Graciosa island, to the company Tecnovia – Açores.
The works have a completion period of 90 days and represent an investment of about 122 thousand Euros.
Porto Afonso is an old and emblematic fishing port in the parish of Guadalupe, municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, being also one of the geosites of the Graciosa Island Nature Park that is known for its singular beauty. It is located in a cove consisting of pyroclastic formations, very high cliffs and rock cavities, once commonly used to store small fishing boats.
Due to coastal erosion, several weaknesses have been detected in the quay, the beaching ramp and the vehicle maneuvering area, so the works in question are specifically targeted to address these weaknesses.
Simultaneously, the historical and cultural memory of that place will be preserved by this intervention, which will also turn this area suitable for bathing.
The project also includes the renovation of the solarium and the construction of a ditch to collect the rainwater that runs down the access road to the port, so as to reduce the erosion caused by the rain on the slope facing the sea. The collected water will be stored in a reservoir, also to be built, which will provide a service water station for port users.
