The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, presided over the opening of the coastal protection works in the area adjacent to the Pasteleirense Recreational Society on the island of Faial, highlighting the improved safety guarantee to the population.

Representing an investment of more than 1.2 million Euros, the project is part of the “fight” against a “phenomenon that is commonplace today and will be even more so in the future,” which concerns climate change and extreme weather events.

This involves the “redevelopment of the coastal area affected by hurricane Lorenzo and the protection of the first row of houses, improving safety and traffic conditions in that area,” said José Manuel Bolieiro.

“It is necessary to be prudent and take preventive action in protecting the coastline,” added the President of the Government.

With a budget of more than 1.2 million Euros, this intervention was intended to redevelop the coastal area affected by hurricane Lorenzo as well as to protect the first row of houses, improving safety and traffic conditions in that area.

The intervention was carried out on the south coast of the island of Faial, being limited to the west by the breakwater of Portinho do Alcaide, stretching eastwards for about 280 metres.

The protection works will ensure the coastal redevelopment of this section and minimise the risk of overwash occurrences, stabilising the erosion process caused by the direct action of sea waves.

The maritime protection is achieved by means of an adherent rockfill prism with a protection mantle consisting of blocks ranging from 3 to 6 tonnes, ending in a reinforced concrete wall to outline the roadway.

The Regional Secretary for the Sea and Fisheries, Manuel São João, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Alonso Miguel, and the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, Berta Cabral, also attended the ceremony.
