The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, received today a delegation of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) in an audience, calling for “justice” in the central distribution of resources to the municipalities.

“A reformist thought is emerging with respect to the financial systems of the country, municipalities and autonomous regions,” he said.

The President of the Government spoke at the Sant’Ana Palace, accompanied by the President of the ANMP, Luísa Salgueiro, the Mayor of Matosinhos.

“Today, perhaps, the greatest difficulties for any of these powers do not lie in the need for more competences, but rather in the availability of resources, with justice and in a decentralised manner on the part of the State,” declared José Manuel Bolieiro – former mayor and member of the governing bodies of ANMP – referring to municipalities and also to the two autonomous regions of the country.

The President of the Government also defended that “any new power and competence” granted to municipalities should be “adequately funded” by the State.
