The Dances, “Bailinhos” (traditional carnival dances) and Carnival Theatre of Terceira Island have been distinguished as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.

“This is a moment to celebrate the Azores, our unique identity, our experiences, festivities and the journey of honouring the Carnival traditions of Terceira Island,” said the Regional Secretary for Education and Cultural Affairs.

For Sofia Ribeiro, this distinction “recognises an identity” passed down “from generation to generation” and the work towards its “defence and safeguarding” carried out by the inhabitants of Terceira island.

“Today, we celebrate the people who are the real protagonists, ensuring the transmission and preservation of the Carnival Dances and “Bailinhos” of Terceira,” she emphasised.

The ceremony took place last Sunday, October 22, at the Costume Museum in Lisbon, as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
