The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, chaired this week the 2nd Consular Meeting of the Azores in Ponta Delgada, recalling the “partnership work” among all actors for the successful integration of emigrants who have chosen the Azores to live.

“We have worked to ensure confidence in supporting emigrants. We have promoted Portuguese courses, multilingual training and initiatives among schools, for example, to foster tolerance, the respect for diversity and hospitality, which is so typical of our identity,” emphasised José Manuel Bolieiro.

The suggestions of the consular corps were heard by the President of the Government, who encouraged the appointment of an honorary consul for Brazil, the community with the largest number of citizens in the Azores.

The meeting brought together representatives of the consular corps accredited in the Region to exchange views on the current situation and future prospects of the different foreign communities residing on the nine islands of the Azores.

The consular corps in the Azores is currently composed of the consul of the United States of America, Margaret C. Campbell, the only career consul, and more than two dozen honorary consuls.
