The Regional Government, through IROA, S.A., has signed a contract for the renovation of water supply systems in Monte Escuro (Lajes do Pico) and Criação Velha (Madalena) to improve the water resilience of the agricultural sector on Pico Island.

These new infrastructures will directly benefit 144 farms, covering an area of around 2,800 hectares.
The area covered by the project is mainly dedicated to beef cattle farming, a sector with a strong presence and high level of expertise on Pico Island.
For the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, the signing of this contract “represents another decisive step in strengthening the infrastructure supporting agriculture in Pico.”
The government official also thanked the company for its commitment and IROA, S.A., for its ongoing work in promoting water resilience and sustainable development in the Azorean agricultural sector.”
This project is part of a wider range of projects agreed between the Environmental Fund and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, which will see a total of €1 million invested across all islands in the installation of equipment to support water storage for agriculture.
With this intervention, the Azorean Government consolidates its commitment to promoting better conditions of resilience, competitiveness and qualification for farms across the archipelago.
