NEWS | Guiding proposals for redevelopment of the Alcohol and Sugar Plants presented on February 4 and 5

The Regional Secretariat for Finance, Planning and Public Administration and the Azores Regional Section of the Architects’ Association are promoting public sessions on February 4 and 5 in Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, respectively, to present the Reports on the Guiding Proposals for the Intervention and Redevelopment of the Alcohol and Sugar Plants.
These reports follow the Cooperation Protocol established on November 11, 2024, between the Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Finance, Planning and Public Administration, and the Azores Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects’ Association, with a view to defining a conciliatory and feasible solution for the future of these two industrial facilities.
In addition to promoting visits to the two plants and holding debates on February 22 (Lagoa) and March 22, 2025 (Ponta Delgada), a public consultation was held with interested parties.
This process now culminates in the presentation and publication of the reports prepared by the two Working Committees set up under the aforementioned protocol.
The session on the Alcohol Plant will take place on February 4 at 8:30 p.m. at the Nonagon Auditorium in Lagoa. The following day, the session on the Sugar Plant will take place at 5:30 pm at the Main Hall of Teatro Micaelense.
This initiative is part of the Regional Government’s strategy to enhance regional assets through public and transparent processes, particularly in this case, which involves emblematic examples of the Azores’ industrial heritage.
It should be noted that these two facilities became part of the Region’s assets as a result of the dissolution of SINAGA – Sociedade de Indústrias Agrícolas Açorianas, S. A. in late 2021.
