The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures welcomed in Ponta Delgada, this week, a group of entrepreneurs from Bermuda, who expressed their “strong interest in investing in the Azores.”

During a working meeting with Berta Cabral, the entrepreneurs, including some descendants of Azoreans and Portuguese who emigrated to Bermuda three or four generations ago, were keen to express their belief in the economic potential of the Azores, while defending the establishment of air links between the Azores and Bermuda.

Berta Cabral took the opportunity to inform investors about the continuous and positive evolution of tourism in the Azores and the main goals of the Regional Government for the future of the sector.

She also emphasised the importance of environmental, economic and social sustainability, which she described as “the main aspect of the positioning of the Azores at a national and international level.”

“The Azores are a true ‘case study’ in terms of sustainability and are internationally recognised in this field,” she stressed.

During the meeting, the real estate sector was also under discussion, with investors expressing their interest in investing in this area.

Moreover, the group of entrepreneurs expressed to the Regional Secretary their recurring concern about the fact that Bermuda driving licences are not valid in Portugal, and the same applies the other way around.

This is a situation that can only be solved through a bilateral agreement between the governments of Portugal and Bermuda. It is beyond the remit of the Regional Government.

Nevertheless, Berta Cabral made a commitment to raise this concern with the National Government in due course.
