The Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Vocational Training and Employment, reveals that there were 4,810 unemployed registered at the Regional Training and Employment Centre as of late September. In the same month, 82 jobs advertised by this centre were filled, corresponding to the placement of 88 Azoreans in the labour market.
Statistical data show a decrease of 14.11% in the number of people looking for a first or new job in September, compared with the same period in the previous year, and a decrease of 0.60% compared with the previous month, i.e. August.
As for the vast majority of the unemployed, 75.88% come from the service sector, corresponding to 87.73% of all unemployed registered in September.
Regarding the number of unemployed per island, São Miguel accounts for 67.48% of the unemployed in the Region, followed by Terceira, standing at 15.57%, Pico, at 6.01%, Faial, at 2.91%, São Jorge, at 2.47%, Graciosa, at 2.16%, Flores, at 1.66%, Santa Maria, at 1.64%, and Corvo, at 0.08%.
In terms of municipalities, Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande and Angra do Heroísmo represented 55.47% of all registered unemployed in the Azores as of September.
In regard to social and professional integration programmes, as of September 2023, there were 1,816 people enrolled in these programmes in the Region: 966 men and 850 women.
As for the measures to promote youth employment, 1,411 young people are taking part in training projects in a real work context, with special emphasis on the “Estagiar L” and “Estagiar T” programmes. As of September, 213 Azoreans were undergoing training.
