AZORES | Regional Government steps up vigilant monitoring of Capelas bypass construction

The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructures, continues to closely monitor the construction of the Capelas Bypass, considered a strategic priority for the Region, having carried out a new on-site inspection last week.
The Regional Secretary, Berta Cabral, emphasised the importance of fully complying with the deadlines set, highlighting that this project is “a key part of the ‘Logistics Circuits – Azores Regional Road Network’ axis, which is part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).”
According to the government official, the intervention “will strengthen territorial cohesion, improve internal mobility and have a direct impact on access to services, regional economic development and road safety.”
During her visit to the construction site, Berta Cabral also pointed out that the Capelas Bypass will help to “mitigate natural hazards, particularly flooding that affects parishes in the municipality of Ponta Delgada.”
The Regional Secretary emphasised that it is essential to maintain and, if necessary, reinforce the human and material resources of the consortium responsible for the work, as well as to streamline procedures with a view to maintaining “an intense and orderly pace of work” to ensure completion within the deadlines.
The government official reiterated that the completion of the Capelas Bypass is a “fundamental priority” in the Annual Regional Plan for 2026, reinforcing the political and institutional commitment to the rigorous execution of EU funds.
“This project is not only structural but also symbolic: it represents the implementation of an investment policy that strengthens the autonomy, cohesion and competitiveness of the Autonomous Region of the Azores,” she said.
The Capelas Bypass will be 8.3 km long, including a 1.4 km connecting road to the town. It is designed to connect the north and south coasts of São Miguel Island, linking Ponta Delgada to the northwest area and Capelas. The overall investment exceeds €46 million, mostly financed under the RRP.
