The Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security, Mónica Seidi, announced today that the expansion of the waiting room at the Modular Hospital of the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital (HDES) in Ponta Delgada has been completed. It will provide “greater comfort for users.”

“In preparation for the winter period and anticipation of the peak influx of emergency patients, the Regional Government, in collaboration with the HDES Board of Directors, has expanded the waiting room of the Modular Hospital’s emergency department. This will ensure greater comfort for patients, without them having to wait outside,” she said.

According to Mónica Seidi, “this expansion is reflected in an increase in capacity from 16 to 80 patients who can wait comfortably in the facilities.”

“The Modular Hospital’s emergency waiting room has grown from 30 m2 to 110 m2. Furthermore, while in the HDES building, we had an emergency area of less than 1,000 m2, in the Modular Hospital we have 1,415 m2 and 13 beds instead of the previous 11,” she specified.

The Regional Secretary also revealed that the company Draguer “began this Monday the preparation for the assembly of the pending equipment, which will be placed on the ceilings of the Operating, Imaging, Intensive Care and C-section Rooms.”

According to the government official, ‘’the project will be completed in the coming weeks, once the equipment has been tested and certified.‘’

Mónica Seidi today praised the “commitment and dedication of all health professionals and all the organisations that have helped the Regional Health Service through this phase from the very first minute.”

“Since May 4 last year, the Regional Government has strictly followed an action plan that prioritises the safety of both patients and health professionals,” she said.

“We cannot afford to make things easy. We will continue to make decisions that have technical sustainability,” said Mónica Seidi, seeing that “this whole situation is extremely complex.”

The Regional Secretary for Health and Social Security also announced that next week, the HDES Board of Directors will announce to the population the planned procedure for the removal of all HDES services from the CUF Açores Hospital, the return to the HDES Hospital Campus and the complete opening of the Modular Hospital.

According to Mónica Seidi, “The transfer from CUF Açores Hospital is expected to be a complex manoeuvre but it is being carefully prepared to ensure the safety of all users and staff.”

“Despite all the setbacks arising from an unprecedented event in our country, the HDES recovery process is on the right track, for the sake of the population of São Miguel Island and the Azores,” she concluded.
