AZORES | Pico Island Council acknowledged “achievements” of current administration, stresses José Manuel Bolieiro

The President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, stated on Wednesday that the Pico Island Council has acknowledged the “achievements” on the island under the current administration.

Areas such as accessibility and health were mentioned at the meeting between the Government and the Pico Island Council. Nevertheless, José Manuel Bolieiro admits that it is inevitable that a “dialogue of progress” will continue and that it will “add value to what has already been achieved” for Pico.

As the President of the Government recalled, the island has “surpassed all expectations” in areas such as tourism, and the “paradigm shift” of the current Government, with the implementation of the Azores Fare, has been a lever for this change.

“It is only natural that questions arise about greater ambitions. However, this Island Council acknowledged the achievements that have been made,” stressed José Manuel Bolieiro.

“I encourage the council members to do this work. We are always making progress,” stated the President of the Government. In this regard, he recalled the presentation of several works during the Government’s statutory visit, namely the new Health Centre in Lajes do Pico, the protection of the coastline of São Roque bay or the Madalena bypass, which is part of the Regional Road network component under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

The Island Council is accompanying the Regional Government in the “fair demands” it is making to the National Government regarding shortcomings such as the delay in the launch of the international public tender for public service obligations (PSOs) for air transport from Mainland Portugal to Santa Maria, Pico and Faial.

This is the third and final day of the Regional Government’s statutory visit to Pico.
